On the Importance of Breakfast

I am a coffee kind of gal.  Like the kind of coffee drinker that has coffee for breakfast. Not kidding.

Until recently, I realized the energy that I am generating is entirely artificial.  Pure energy originates from within. It comes from restful sleep, blood flowing from a morning walk, jog, or simple stretch and a good breakfast. Not a good coffee breakfast but a breakfast that consist of the following:

50% Protein + 30% Fat + 20% Carb

I didn’t entirely make this up.  We need protein to help build those amino acids and fat for satiation and carbs to replenish our glucose stores.  This equation might look different if you are an athlete or if you are on a particular diet that requires less fat, so don’t go taking this equation as gospel.

Really, the point is, strive for breakfast. A breakfast that is not coffee. A breakfast with a higher Fat & Protein to Carb ratio. Rather than focusing on numbers and ratios, following a simple method of eating something that is protein based, consists of fat and some form of healthy carbs on the side.

Why Breakfast is Important

We all know how this story begins.  We wake up with little to no time for ourselves, so we walk out the door without consuming anything.  Not even a glass of water.

If we love ourselves enough, we will make time for breakfast.  So that we’re not ‘hangry’ when the boss is asking for a status update on that project you were supposed to start on a week ago.  Living our best version of ourselves means, loving ourself enough to sit down and eat breakfast.  It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Breakfast is important because it’s the start of the day. If we can’t start our day with the simple act of self love, then what do we have without love?

Food is medicine and what I mean by this, is to start healing yourself, you must love yourself enough to to feed yourself.  I think we all know we need to eat better and we should eat breakfast and we should stop eating out and we are shoulding all over ourselves but what it really come down to is self love.

Is getting to work more important than you?

Feeding the kids first is more important than you?

Of course not, right?! You’re like, yeah, duh!

So tomorrow morning, because you love yourself. Sit down and eat a little bit of something.  See what a difference it brings to your day.

Creating the Habit

If you’re not in the habit of eating breakfast, start with breakfast smoothies.  These are fast, full of antioxidants, vitamins, and some have a variation of fat and protein.  Here are my recommendations for protein powder.

If that’s still too time consuming, start with overnight oats.  I’ve included another one of my favorite go to breakfast items.  The longer it sits the better.  You can make enough to last for an entire week! Prep once, eat twice (or heck 5 times)!

Keep it simple. If all else fails, keep bananas stocked and trail mix in the pantry.  Grab the trail mix and a banana for your morning commute.  Something is better than nothing.

Do you think we should have a breakfast challenge? I’d love to hear from you! Tell me what kind of challenge you would partake in and how many days do you think is enough to keep you motivated and committed, 7, 14 or 21 days?
